How Orthodontic Treatment Systems Work
Taditional orthodontic treatment using braces involves the use of brackets & bands. The brackets and bands are bonded or cemented to the teeth and wires are used to move them. Light continuous force is used in a carefully controlled direction to slowly guide the teeth into their new corrected position. Additional forces using elastics, springs, expanders, and headgear (to name a few) are sometimes used to correct bite problems, which we call ‘malocclusions’. Dr. Logeman takes pride in achieving optimal results efficiently!
The Invisalign® system utilizes a sequential series of transparent plastic ‘aligners’to align teeth. The aligners are customized to fit snugly over the teeth and are worn for 10-14 days before switching to the next aligner. While they may be removed for mealtime and oral hygiene, the aligners are worn as much as possible in order to work effectively. With good patient compliance, beautiful results can definitely be obtained using the Invisalign® system…without braces!
Duration of Treatment
Treatment time will vary from patient to patient. Teeth move at different rates depending on age, bone density, and compliance. Patients grow at different rates and will respond variously to orthodontic treatment. There is also a very wide range of complexity from one case to the next, so the time it takes to complete a case varies greatly. The patient’s diligent use of any prescribed rubber bands or appliances is an important factor in achieving the most efficient treatment. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, including minor tooth movement, can take as little as a few weeks or less!
